The 5 S's of Pearls:
Classification Guide

How Quality and Prices are Determined?

Pearls have captivated jewellery lovers for centuries with their natural elegance and unique allure. But when it comes to choosing the perfect pearl, there’s more to consider than just its colour or size. The “FIVE S” ("5 S") are the key characteristics that define a pearl’s quality, beauty, and value.

The "5 S" system classifies a pearl based on Shine (lustre quality), Surface (blemish visibility), Shade (colour), Shape (round, drop, baroque, etc.), and Size (diameter in millimeters). Each characteristic is rated to offer a complete picture of pearl quality, aiding buyers in selecting pearls with the finest combination of these attributes. This approach provides an industry standard that highlights the unique features of each pearl.

Surface: Blemishes and Pearl’s Grain

The surface of a pearl is its outermost layer, and a flawless surface speaks to its quality. Top-grade pearls will have a smooth, clear, and unblemished appearance. While small imperfections like dimples or ridges are common and natural, pearls with fewer blemishes are considered of higher quality.

 Pro Tip:

Inspect pearls under soft lighting and rotate them to check for any obvious imperfections. A quality pearl should reflect light uniformly and feel silky smooth to the touch.

Shape: Traditional vs. Trendy

Pearls come in various shapes, each with its own charm. The classic round pearl is highly coveted and often the most valuable due to its rarity. However, other shapes like baroque (free-form, irregular) and drop (teardrop) are also gaining popularity for their individuality and organic appeal.

 Pro Tip:

If you’re looking for a traditional look, go for round or near-round pearls. For a unique, statement piece, consider baroque pearls, which make striking centrepieces in rings or necklaces due to their non-conformist shapes.

Shine (Lustre): The Radiant Glow

Lustre is perhaps the most defining feature of a pearl, giving it that beautiful inner glow that makes pearls so captivating. This lustrous effect is created by layers of nacre (the substance pearls are made from), which reflects light, creating depth and a mirror-like finish.

 Pro Tip:

Look at the pearl under natural light and see how well it reflects objects. High-quality pearls will have a deep, mirror-like lustre that’s almost metallic, while low-quality pearls may appear dull or chalky.

Size: Bigger Pearls, Greater Value

Pearls can vary greatly in size, usually starting from 2.5 mm with some of the largest pearls reaching up to 20mm or more!
Larger pearls are generally more expensive, but the best size for you depends on your personal style and the piece you’re looking to create. Smaller pearls offer a delicate and understated elegance, while larger pearls make bold, luxurious statements.

 Pro Tip:

When choosing size, consider where you’ll wear the pearl jewellery. Smaller pearls are ideal for daily wear, such as stud earrings or delicate necklaces, while larger pearls are perfect for statement pieces in evening wear or special occasions.

Shade: Finding Your Perfect Hue

Pearls come in an array of colours, each offering something unique. While white and cream pearls are timeless and versatile, shades like pink, black, and even gold add a modern twist. The colour of a pearl is determined by the mollusk species that produced it and its natural environment, creating colours that range from soft pastels to deep, iridescent hues.

 Pro Tip:

Choose a shade that complements your skin tone and wardrobe. White pearls suit nearly everyone and go with any outfit, while black or blue pearls can add a touch of drama.
